Stress management by definition is the ability to reduce the negative impacts caused by stress and to improve an individual's mental and physical well-being. Managing stress can help encourage a healthier and more balanced life especially whilst working in a stressful work environment. There are many approaches to dealing with stress management as a healthcare professional working in a stressful setting. Here are some tips to reduce stress as a healthcare professional.
Physical activity can help reduce the production of stress and anxiety. Consistent physical activity can help regulate the body’s stress levels making you less reactive to stressful situations. It is evident by research that physical activity can provide the body with an overall better sleep quality which is essential for healthcare professionals working in a hospital setting. It can also increase an individual’s self-confidence and self-esteem which can prevent the negative effects of stress.
Mindfulness and relaxation:
Mindfulness is the ability to maintain and be aware of thoughts, feelings, and the environment. It encourages the ability to be present in the moment and pay attention to thoughts regardless of whether they’re “wrong or right”. Practicing mindfulness encourages individuals to manage stress and cope better with serious illnesses, reduce anxiety and depression. Healthcare professionals can practice mindfulness by practicing mindful breathing. It is evident that taking short breaks throughout the day especially whilst working in a stressful environment such as a hospital setting is vital to calm the mind and reduce stress. Practicing meditation is extremely important for mindfulness it has many benefits including better sleep, stress reduction, and enhanced resilience.
Sleep hygiene is extremely important, especially as a healthcare professional working long hours. it is another way to reduce stress. Maintaining good sleep habits will enable the ability to fall asleep quicker, stay asleep longer as well as getting a more restful sleep. There are many benefits of good sleep hygiene including enhanced immune system function, decreased stress, improved mood, and better blood sugar regulation. Keeping a good sleep schedule will include getting regular exercise, maintaining the right bedroom environment, and limiting napping time.
As a healthcare professional, it is important to establish boundaries between work and personal life. Setting boundaries to separate your personal life and work not only increases efficiency at work but will also reduce stress in your personal life. Both of these result in increased relaxation and composure.
